Riveted chainmail

Medieval On-line Shop - Riveted chainmail

Our medieval online shop offers riveted chainmail patterns dated back from the ancient times to the 17th century. Our chainmail clothing includes not only chainmail tunics, with chainmail coifs and mittens, but also other pieces of chainmail clothing: chainmail hoses, chainmail hoods worn separately, chainmail collars, chainmail aprons, Bishop's chainmail collars, chainmail elements for gambesons, and many others. Each chainmail ring is handmade. We use steel with structure similar to the medieval. Making chainmail in Kokosh's Manufacture is a medieval craft - we use only historical methods. Chainmail ring size can be adjusted according to your preferences, as well as the weave (to the right or to the left side). Chainmail rings can be round or elliptic. Each one is riveted separately with triangular or cylindrical rivets. Our manufacture offers conservation and cleaning of chainmails, chainmail repairs and alterations (including chainmails from other manufaturers), leather and decorative finishings for chainmail clothing.

Gambeson

Medieval On-line Shop - Gambeson

Gambeson (also know as aketon or padded jack) was made of several layers of linen and fleece (unprocessed wool) as a lining. It was sewed (or more precisely: quilted) with a linen thread. Sometimes, when a gambeson is exclusively hand-made, the thread can be enhanced with beeswax. Gambesons were used as armour or worn beneath the chainmail or another armour as an additional protection. At first gambesons were long and wothout buttons, but as early as in the 14th century their pattern changed significantly. Gambeson started to look more like a jacket with buttons, gathered in waist or fasten in the front. The 15th century gambeson, called also arming doublet at that time, started to have decorative elements, such as puffed sleeves. The quilting method used in the manufacturing of gambesons was also used for making helmet padded finishings and hoses.

Medieval padded hoses

Medieval On-line Shop - Medieval padded hoses

Medieval padded hoses protected knights’ legs during the battle. Throughout the medieval times padded hoses were worn by infantry as well as cavalry. Medieval padded hoses for knights looked the same as those worn by civilians. Because a medieval padded hose was made of linen and fleece (unprocessed wool), it was quite comfortable and light. Because hoses were a part of medieval armour, they were given some additional protective elements: leather, metal or riveted chainmail. Such improved padded hoses were very popular up to the 14th century.
