14th-15th century gambesons

Gambesons made in the 14th-15th century had more complex patterns than the earlier ones. They are made of several parts, and because of that are more comfortable and fitting to the wearer’s body. We use linen, fleece (unprocessed wool) and waxed, linen thread. There are three main patterns of gambeson in the 14th-15th century. The first one is simple, with vertical stripe quilting, fasten with leather rope in the front. This kind of gambeson was used mainly by infantry. The second one is the so-called Pourpoint Charles de Blois (used since 1361), worn by men of higher social status. This gambeson was constructed of 16-33 elements, which contributed to its mobility. The third kind of gambeson is gathered in waist, with opening and buttons. At first, it was worn by aristocracy, later it was also used by infantry. This gambeson is perfect for Grunwald reenactment. You may choose the thickness according to your armour. The standard is 5 layers of linen.
