The 9th-11th century gambesons are called early gambesons. They were very simple at that time, either long- or short sleeved. The main materials are linen and leather, with fleece (unprocessed wool) between the layers of material as stuffing. Only linen thread was used for quilting (sewing the layers of material together). In the 9th-11th century gambesons were worn mainly underneath the chainmail or plate armour. They also could be a kind of armour worn independently. There were two kinds of quilting: rhomb and vertical stripe shaped. Kokosh's Manufacture offers two patterns of early gambesons: with opening and buttons in the front or without them.
