Gambeson

Gambeson (also know as aketon or padded jack) was made of several layers of linen and fleece (unprocessed wool) as a lining. It was sewed (or more precisely: quilted) with a linen thread. Sometimes, when a gambeson is exclusively hand-made, the thread can be enhanced with beeswax. Gambesons were used as armour or worn beneath the chainmail or another armour as an additional protection. At first gambesons were long and wothout buttons, but as early as in the 14th century their pattern changed significantly. Gambeson started to look more like a jacket with buttons, gathered in waist or fasten in the front. The 15th century gambeson, called also arming doublet at that time, started to have decorative elements, such as puffed sleeves. The quilting method used in the manufacturing of gambesons was also used for making helmet padded finishings and hoses.
