In the 14th-15th century chainmail became rather additional to the armour, instead of being the armour itself. Plate armour was more and more popular among knights because it offered more protection during the battle. Chainmail was worn underneath it. Knights chose short chainmail shirts, collars, chainmail aprons, and other small elements instead of full chainmail clothing. At that time, civilians started to use chainmail underneath their clothes. It gave the protection they needed - almost invisible but effective.
