Medieval underwear was indispensable in medieval clothing. It protected against hot as well as cold temperatures. Medieval underwear was also a layer of clothes that helped surviving in itchy medieval outfits. Medieval underwear for men consisted of braies and shirts. These two pieces of underwear were undergoing significant changes throughout the centuries. Medieval underwear was usually made of linen, sometimes silk or very thin and closely woven wool, but exclusively in upper classes.
